Our Story centers on the events of September 6, 1777 that occurred at the Hale-Byrnes House under the shade of what is now known as the George Washington Witness Tree.

The history of the Hale-Byrnes House

The Hale-Byrnes House is a historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places located at 606 Stanton-Christiana Road, Stanton, New Castle County, Delaware. The house gained historic significance when General George Washington held a council of war with his generals at the house on September 6, 1777 to determine how best to defend Philadelphia from the British. The Tree

The George Washington Witness Tree

During the Council of War before the Battle of Brandywine, Washington and his officers shaded themselves under the American Sycamore tree in front of the Hale-Byrnes House. To learn more about the history of the tree please click here.
