How the House was built

The historic Hale-Byrnes House was the site of the Council of War on September 6th, 1777, five days before the Battle of Brandy-wine. The house was built during the eighteenth century. The oldest section dates to c.1750; the service wing was built in 1773. Hale-Byrnes House was the first building in Delaware to receive the State Heritage Plaque!

If you would like to visit the Hale-Byrnes House and learn about its history, the house is off Exit 4B of I-95. Take Route 7 North and turn right immediately after the Morgan-Christiana Bank Center. The street address is 606 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, Delaware 19713.

Fun Facts about the House

1.       The American Revolutionary War Round Table of Northern Delaware is a charitable and educational program sponsored by the Delaware Society for the Preservation of Antiquities as a constituent part of its charitable and educational mission!

2.       The Hale-Byrnes House, along with Abbott’s Mill, Milford Museum, Pencader Heritage Museum, Robinson House, and other Historic properties that are owned by the State of Delaware, the Division of Historical Affairs, and operated by private organizations, are officially classified as “Historic Sites”!

The mission of the DSPA-Hale Byrnes House (the Delaware Society for the Preservation of Antiquities-Hale Byrnes House) is to protect, preserve, and promote the buildings and grounds of the historic Hale-Byrnes House, the 18thcentury Quaker farmstead, and the site of the Council of War three days after the Battle of Cooch's Bridge, through ongoing preservation work of the offering high-quality public programming!
State historic sites are irreplaceable public assets and must be secured for future generations through protection and preservation as well as their use and enjoyment. Such sites may be made available for special events and group activities. These activities must meet guidelines, criteria, and rules and procedures established by the Division.
The principal office of the Corporation is located at 606 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, Delaware 19713.  The Corporation may have such other offices, inside or outside the State of Delaware, as the Board of Trustees may deem appropriate.

What we Offer

What Hale-Byrnes House can offer

The Hale-Byrnes House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the nine-state Washington-Rochambeau National Historic Trail. The house is the southern anchor site of the federally designated Wild and Scenic White Clay Creek.
To further add, we members, at the Hale-Byrnes House, are operated by the 501 c-3 nonprofit Delaware Society for the Preservation of Antiquities.This allows the downstairs section of the house to be available for rent for meetings and events with fewer than 25 people. Furthermore, we are open Noon - 3pm on the first Wednesday of each month for public programs and appointments!
